The Day Freefall Stopped Needing an Aircraft

Most people, when they imagine freefall, imagine an aircraft.
They imagine the altitude. The door opening. The moment before the exit. The sound of rushing air. The earth somewhere far below. Everything about the way freefall is described in popular culture, in films, in conversations at skydiving drop zones, frames the experience around the machinery that delivers it.
The aircraft is so central to most descriptions of skydiving that it is easy to forget the aircraft is not actually the point.
Freefall is not about altitude. It never was.
When a skydiver exits an aircraft, the sensation of flight is produced because air is moving rapidly around the body at sufficient speed to generate aerodynamic effects. The body responds to that airflow. It produces lift, drag, movement, and control. The physical relationship between the human body and the moving air is what creates the experience.
Which means the altitude is somewhat incidental.
The aircraft is somewhat incidental.
What matters is the relationship between the body and the air around it. Whether the body is falling toward stationary air, or whether stationary air is being moved rapidly around a stationary body, is a question of engineering. The aerodynamic principles at work are largely the same.
That insight sounds obvious with hindsight. In the context of the 1970s, it was not obvious at all.
For most of the history of skydiving, nobody was looking at the problem this way. Skydivers were skydivers. They trained to jump from aircraft, manage freefall, deploy parachutes, and land safely. Wind tunnels existed in aerospace research contexts, used by engineers to study how airflow behaved around aircraft and vehicles and structures. The two worlds occupied completely different spaces and rarely intersected.
What they had in common was almost never noticed.
Until someone noticed it.
Jean Saint-Germain came from a parachuting background. He understood freefall from the inside. He knew the sensation in his body, and he knew what created it. He also understood the barriers. Aircraft needed to be booked. Weather could ground operations for days at a stretch. Equipment required continuous maintenance. Training was time-intensive and expensive. The entire operational machinery of skydiving existed to deliver a few minutes of freefall to people willing to organise their lives considerably around the experience.
Most people, he understood, would never do that.
Most people were not skydivers and were not going to become skydivers. But many of them, he believed, might be genuinely fascinated by the sensation of flight itself if that sensation could be separated from everything around it.
If the aircraft could be removed.
If the altitude could be removed.
If what remained was simply the air and the body.
This was the insight.
Not the engineering, which came later and took years to refine. The insight was conceptual. It was the recognition that what people actually wanted, beneath the expressed interest in skydiving, was not the logistics of jumping from a plane. It was the sensation of human flight.
And that sensation did not require an aircraft.
It required relative wind.
Saint-Germain developed what would become the first commercial bodyflight attraction built for the general public. The facility opened near Saint-Germain-en-Laye, west of Paris, in 1979. Visitors could enter a vertical airflow system and experience, for the first time as a paying public experience, the sensation of controlled human flight without boarding an aircraft.
The engineering was limited by the standards of what would follow decades later. Safety systems, airflow quality, operational procedures, all of these would evolve significantly over the years ahead. Judged against what modern facilities offer, the 1979 facility was rudimentary.
Judged by what it represented, it was genuinely transformative.
Industries are rarely defined by who first proves a concept possible. They tend to be defined by who first makes that concept accessible.
The earliest automobiles existed before Henry Ford changed the economics of car ownership. Commercial flight existed before the jet age made it affordable for ordinary families. Personal computing existed before interfaces made it usable by people with no interest in programming. In each case, the critical shift was not purely technological. Someone looked at an existing capability and asked who else might want access to it, and what it would take to reach them.
Saint-Germain asked that question about bodyflight.
His answer was that ordinary people, people who had no particular interest in skydiving as a sport, no desire to spend weekends at drop zones, no appetite for the full apparatus of parachuting, would still find genuine value in the sensation itself.
He was right.
Not in the sense that the 1979 facility was a commercial triumph, because it was not. It was a demonstration of possibility. But what it demonstrated was significant. The market was larger than anyone inside the skydiving community had assumed. It extended beyond parachutists. It extended beyond athletes and enthusiasts. It extended to families, tourists, curious individuals, people motivated by nothing more specific than the desire to know what it felt like to be briefly free of the ground.
I think about this when I see someone fly for the first time.
The specific demographic almost never matters. Age, background, fitness level, professional context, none of these turn out to be particularly predictive of how someone responds to the experience of sustained flight. What they share, across every category, is a version of the same thing. A desire that was already there before they arrived. A question they had been carrying about what it would feel like.
The question is the older part. The technology just finally caught up with it.
What Saint-Germain contributed was not the final answer. It was the starting point. The question that made the answers worth pursuing. He showed that freefall could be decoupled from altitude, that bodyflight could be separated from the machinery of skydiving, and that if you did those things, you did not narrow the market.
You expanded it dramatically.
The engineering problems that followed were real and took decades to resolve properly. The business model required sustained refinement. The safety systems needed development. The operational experience required careful accumulation. None of that was a surprise. Every industry that eventually mattered went through a version of that process.
But the insight that made all of it worth pursuing was simpler than the engineering that followed.
Freefall does not need an aircraft.
The body needs air. And air can be moved.
Once that was understood clearly, the rest became, in some sense, a solvable problem. And solvable problems, given enough time and the right people working on them, tend to get solved.
